The Horizon Europe project ETICA (Center for Ethics in Public Affairs) at the American University of Armenia, directed by the ERA Chair Professor Maria Baghramian, will inaugurate its international activities through a major multi-disciplinary conference on the theme of National Identity in a Time of Crisis. The conference, taking place on June 29 and 30, 2025 at AUA, is co-hosted by the NYU Global Institute for Advanced Study the [Armenian Society of Fellows](https://asof.am/home/about/#:~:text=ASOF was founded on April,well%2C from around the world.)) and the AUA Turpanjian Institute of Social Sciences, where the Center for Ethics in Public Affairs will be based.
The conference explores foundational questions relevant to the place, the significance and the nature of national identity in a world facing a multitude of old and new challenges and uncertainties. The keynote speakers are:

Abstracts of 500 words, for conference presentations of 30-40 minutes, in English or Armenian, are invited on topics relevant to the general theme of the conference, including but not limited to:
Narratives of national identity: A construction or an immovable cultural heritage?
The markers of national identity: Language; Shared history; Religion; Art; Architecture; Other cultural symbols.
Shared and contested national identities
The politics of national identity: The uses and abuses of national identities in political contexts
The ethics of national identity: Rights, responsibilities and moral obligations
National identities across geographical boundaries
Identities beyond national boundaries and the impact of migration
Multiculturalism and national identity
Abstracts on themes from the work of the keynote speakers are also very welcome.
The official languages of the conference are English and Armenian. Abstracts in either language are welcome. The keynote sessions will be translated but the submitted papers, organised in parallel sessions, will not be. We aim to publish a selection of the conference proceedings.
This is an in-person conference. Online presentations will not be facilitated.
